Tony Blair clashed with an audience of sixth-formers today as he defended Britain's role in Afghanistan.

In a question-and-answer session with 1,500 teenagers at Westminster, he was put on the defensive over the war and the treatment of al Qaeda detainees.

After Mr Blair claimed the people of Afghanistan saw the Taliban's defeat as a form of liberation, a heckler called out: "They don't, they don't."

Mr Blair hit back: "Don't talk to me about it. Talk to people in Afghanistan about the nature of the regime."
